Throughout the life of a well, the set annular cement will undergo a multitude of stress cycles such as pressure testing, hydraulic fracturing, and temperature variations, to name a few. Over the long term, this can challenge the cement to effectively isolate hydrocarbon zones from adjacent and/or uphole zones and lead to the release of formation gasses. Trican’s SustainableCement™ program aims to predict, evaluate, and eliminate the associated risk of cement-sheath loss of integrity both through the early stages of the well, and beyond to eventual abandonment of the well once production has ceased. The program combines cement mechanical property testing with cement sheath integrity modeling to design an economic cement blend that will withstand all the stresses the cement will undergo over its entire life cycle.

A sustainable cement blend does not have to cost more. It just has to be right for the variables of the operation and the formation. There is no “One Size Fits All” solution, as nuances exist in a variety of forms whether by operator, area, depth, formations drilled through, number of frac stages, etc. By determining properties such as Poisson’s ratio, Young’s modulus, the shear and tensile strength of our cement systems, in addition to various characteristics of the formations we are trying to isolate, we are able to model whether a cement system will fail under certain criteria, and furthermore, under what failure mechanism. With this knowledge and understanding, we can work to provide the best possible cement design to our customers for the best possible outcome of their wells.

Factors to consider when modeling a proposed cement program include:

Operational factors

  • Pressure testing

  • Hydraulic fracturing and acidizing

  • Production testing

  • Production cycles

  • Water disposal (wastewater and produced water)

Formation factors

  • Downhole environment (CO2, caustic brines, sulphates, etc.)

  • Temperature gradient

  • Formation stress and well shift

Cost factors

  • SustainableCement™ is not a new cement product. It’s a confirmation that you are using the right blend for your well and operational conditions.
